| Starting the tour, discussing the land of the Aboriginal ancestors |
On 22 April 2012 our community had a chance to walk back in time, as we learned about the Jewish history of Newtown. Gary Luke, a local resident and community member who volunteers with the Australian Jewish Historical Society, led the tour and shared his impressive historical research. He took the 30 participants along the back streets off Wilson Street, where many Jewish families resided during the 1920's and 1930's, then along King Street, which was home to a multitude of Jewish businesses, to the Newtown Synagogue, consecrated in 1919. To conclude the tour, Lisa Jackson Pulver, President of the Synagogue, provided hospitality in the community hall and a tour of the synagogue itself.

Participants on the tour donated over $170 to COMET ME. (See separate post to learn about this joint Israeli-Palestinian group.)
We have a few copies of a 1974 booklet, "History of the Western Suburbs Synagogue". Please contact us if you are interested.
A printed version of the tour is planned for later this year.
