A Conversation with Sulaiman Khatib

Suleiman Khatib
in Newtown

On 30 August, iwJAFA hosted a conversation with Sulaiman Khatib, currently in Australia as co-ordinator of the Palestinian contingent of the AFL Peace Team.  About 80 people came to hear Sulaiman tell the story of his early life and his decision to take up non-violence as the means to achieve peace between Palestinians and Israelis.

Sulaiman took up arms against Israel at the age of 14, was eventually caught and spent more than 10 years in Israeli prison. He went on to found Combatants for Peace, a joint endeavour with ex Israel soldiers working to break the cycle of violence.

He is now General director of Al Quds Association for Democracy and Dialogue, an NGO based in Ramallah that works to promote peace, democracy and dialogue between Palestinians and Israelis
